The Nottinghamshire official will be making his third trip to Tyneside this term and his second since the restart, having already overseen United’s 3-0 victory over Sheffield United last month.
Coote’s other appointment at St. James’ this season came in December 2019, when he took charge of the Magpies’ 2-1 win over Southampton.
In all, it will be the fourth time Coote – who has been a Football League referee since 2010 – has been in the middle of a game involving Newcastle in 2019/20. The other occasion was the FA Cup third round tie at Rochdale, which ended in a 1-1 draw back in January.
The majority of his 26 outings this term have come in the Premier League, though, with other fixtures in the Championship, FA Cup and Carabao Cup. In those games, Coote has issued a total of 94 yellow cards – and is yet to keep his cards pocketed.
He has dished out just two red cards all season, however, with one of those coming at St. James’ Park. Coote dismissed Sheffield United’s John Egan in that convincing win for Steve Bruce’s men in June.
Ian Hussin and Nick Hopton will assist Coote on Wednesday (6pm kick-off), with Martin Atkinson acting as the fourth official.
Peter Bankes will be VAR, assisted by Lee Betts, while Paul Hodskinson will be the replacement official.
