The match officials for Wednesday night’s Carabao Cup clash between Newcastle United and Burnley have been confirmed, with Oliver Langford set to take charge of the fixture.

United face a fellow Premier League side under the lights at St. James’ Park (7:45pm kick-off) with a place in the third round on offer for the winners.

And Langford has been appointed as referee for the game, which will be his first trip to Tyneside since the start of the 2016/17 campaign.

The Dudley official was the man in the middle for the Magpies’ first home match of that season in the Championship, which resulted in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Huddersfield Town.

Prior to that, the only time he has had an appointment involving United was a 1-0 League Cup win at Gillingham in August 2014, sealed by a John Egan own goal.

Langford hasn’t overseen a Newcastle game since then, though, but is an established second tier referee. Having begun his career in the game in 2009, it took him a decade to work his way up through the divisions before making his Premier League bow in 2019 during a 1-1 draw between Chelsea and Leicester, after stepping up from fourth official with Graham Scott having found himself stuck in traffic.

So far this season, Langford has found himself in charge of four matches across the Championship and Carabao Cup, issuing ten yellow cards.

Last term, he dished out 107 yellow cards and six reds across 30 games in the EFL and domestic cup competitions.

Paul Hodskinson and Philip Dermott will assist Langford on Wednesday, with Leigh Doughty acting as fourth official.
