The Fans Supporting Foodbanks event, which was sponsored by Newcastle United and the club’s catering partner, Sodexo Prestige Venue & Events, was organised by the Football Supporters Federation (FSF) following a hugely successful supporter-led scheme on Tyneside.

The scheme - NUFC Fans Foodbank - was set up by kindhearted Magpies supporters in January 2017 to benefit the Newcastle West End Foodbank, which is the largest of its kind in the UK.

After a successful launch, the FSF decided to invite supporters and community leaders to the home of Newcastle United to learn more about how fans and a clubs can be a driver for positive change.

The FSF were joined by Newcastle’s Chi Onwurah MP and Gateshead’s Ian Mearns MP, as well as supporters and community figures representing clubs including Liverpool, Everton, Celtic, Sunderland, Aston Villa and Doncaster Rovers.

Kevin Miles, FSF chief executive, said: “While we’d all rather live in a world where food banks weren’t necessary, as long as they are it’s great to see football supporters taking seriously their commitment to their local community.

“The event has been really successful, promoting the idea, sharing best practice and inspiring activity in new areas.”
