Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of defender Jetro Willems on a season-long loan deal from Eintracht Frankfurt.

The 25-year-old left-back joins the club for the 2019/20 season and the Magpies will have the option of making the move permanent at the end of the campaign.

Head coach Steve Bruce said: "Jetro brings a wealth of experience into the dressing room and I'm very pleased to have brought him here.

"He has played at the highest level and is naturally left-footed so he’ll give us another strong option on that side."

Willems began his career at Dutch club Sparta Rotterdam before joining PSV Eindhoven in 2011, where he became the youngest Dutchman to play in a UEFA competition after starting against Hapoel Tel Aviv in PSV's Europa League group stage match during the 2011/12 season.

At international level, Willems has 22 caps with the Netherlands national team, winning the European Under-17 Championship in 2011 and, at the 2012 European Championships, became the youngest player ever to play in the competition's history after starting in Holland's opening group match against Denmark at the age of 18 years and 71 days.

After six years at PSV, winning two Eredivisie titles, the KNVB Cup and two Johan Cruyff Shields, Willems joined Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt where the Rotterdam-born defender lifted the German Cup in 2018.
