The 39-year-old from West Yorkshire advanced through the leagues to become a Select Group 1 referee in June 2019, having taken charge of his first top-flight game - a 2-2 draw between Watford and AFC Bournemouth, then managed by Eddie Howe - in March 2018.

He refereed the League One play-off final between Charlton Athletic and Sunderland in May 2019, which Charlton won 2-1. His brother Bobby is also a referee and was promoted back to the Premier League this season.

Madley has officiated in the Champions League and Europa Conference League this term but has yet to referee a game involving the Magpies. He did, however, take charge of last season's 1-1 home draw with Norwich City in November 2021, when he showed an early red card to Ciaran Clark.
