Beth Lumsden has challenged Newcastle United Women to attack the new season as they prepare for life in the FA Women's Championship.

The 25-year-old, who joined the Magpies from Portsmouth Women in January, was instrumental in Becky Langley's side pushing on and lifting the FA Women's National League Northern Premier Division trophy last term.

That made it back-to-back promotions for the Lasses, who tasted defeat just once in the league. The new season kicks off at London City Lionesses on Sunday and while Lumsden acknowledges there is a step up in quality, she was in bullish mood ahead of the big kick-off at Hayes Lane.

"We don’t fear anyone," Lumsden told newcastleunited.com. "We're here to win and not just make up the numbers.

"We're really excited to get on Sunday and I think we're in a good position to make a strong start to the season."

Sunday's opponents, well established in the Women's Championship, have been busy in the transfer market throughout the summer - much like Newcastle, who have brought in nine players during the close season.

It was only two seasons ago when London City finished third in this division, having been runners-up in 2021-22, so Lumsden is expecting a tough game.

However, United's number 26 believes that it's also an opportunity for her and her team-mates to show the league what they're all about.

"I think they're going to be a strong opposition," Lumsden said.

"They've made some big signings but Sunday is an opportunity to pick up three points in a league which continues to improve every year.

"I just want to be playing and that could be anywhere across the frontline; just wherever Becky and the team need me, I just want to be out there."

Despite only joining the club at the beginning of the year, Lumsden has already created an excellent bond with the United fanbase with her electric pace and wicked deliveries, so it's no surprise she's eager to hear them on Sunday at Hayes Lane.

"We can't wait to see the fans again because it feels like it's been forever," she said.

"Obviously, we saw them for the game at St James' Park against AC Milan, but I'm so excited to see them on Sunday, and hopefully bring back three points."
