It was a happier afternoon for Henri Saivet, though, who helped Saint-Etienne to a thumping win over Lorient at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
In Switzerland, Kevin Mbabu took to the pitch in the 73rd minute as Young Boys suffered a 4-1 defeat at Luzern.
Closer to home, not one of the four United players currently on loan at EFL clubs tasted victory.
Macaulay Gillesphey was the only of the quartet to start, playing all 90 minutes as out-of-form Carlisle United were beaten 4-1 by Blackpool at Brunton Park.
A division above, Ivan Toney played the final half-hour of Scunthorpe United’s shock defeat to Shrewsbury Town, while Alex Gilliead didn’t get off the bench for Bradford City, who drew 1-1 at Bristol Rovers.
In the Championship, Adam Armstrong came on midway through the second half as Barnsley held high-flying Reading to a goalless draw at the Madejski Stadium.
Finally, Blyth Spartans’ remarkable run continued with a 5-1 win over Hednesford Town at Croft Park. Paul Woolston was involved from the outset for Spartans, who are now 20 points clear at the top of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League.
