Toney – set to see out the remainder of the campaign with the Iron – entered the fray with ten minutes left against his former club, who he left to join United in 2015.

There was also a debut for Alex Gilliead on Saturday, but the winger’s Bradford City side suffered a surprise 1-0 defeat at relegation-threatened Shrewsbury Town.

Gilliead came on in place of Frenchman Timothee Dieng at the Greenhous Meadow, but was unable to help the Bantams to a share of the spoils.

In League Two, Macaulay Gillesphey played all 90 minutes as Carlisle United were held to a 1-1 draw by Morecambe at Brunton Park.

Gillesphey has now made six consecutive starts for Carlisle, who remain in the automatic promotion places.

Further up the pyramid, Adam Armstrong came on with 20 minutes remaining as Barnsley suffered a 2-0 defeat to Fulham at Craven Cottage.

It was a happier afternoon for young goalkeeper Paul Woolston, however, whose Blyth Spartans side moved to the top of the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League courtesy of a 2-0 victory over Nantwich Town at Croft Park.

On the continent, a string of United loanees returned to action after the conclusion of the winter break.

In France, Florian Thauvin’s Marseille suffered a disastrous 4-1 defeat to Monaco, bringing a four-game winning sequence to an end.

Thauvin played 89 minutes at the Stade Velodrome before being replaced by Saif-Eddine Khaoui.

In La Liga, Emmanuel Riviere’s Osasuna didn’t fare much better, Los Rojillos remaining rooted to the foot of the table after letting a half-time advantage slip against fellow strugglers Granada.

Finally, in the Netherlands, Siem de Jong replaced younger brother Luuk late on as PSV Eindhoven saw off Excelsior at the Philips Stadion.
