Mitrović’s 70th-minute strike for Fulham looked to have secured the Cottagers another crucial victory against Brentford – a result which would have taken Slaviša Jokanović’s side back into the Championship’s top two. However, Neal Maupay’s leveller deep into added time dealt a hammer blow to their hopes of going up automatically, with Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City again in pole position to join Wolverhampton Wanderers in next season’s Premier League.
In League One, though, Toney’s effort for Scunthorpe United against Charlton Athletic proved decisive as the Iron leapfrogged the Addicks to move into a play-off place. The frontman has now found the net six times since his switch to Glanford Park in January.
Another young Magpie chasing promotion from the third tier, Adam Armstrong, played 90 minutes as Blackburn Rovers drew 1-1 at Bristol Rovers’ Memorial Ground. Tony Mowbray’s side looked to be returning to the summit of the division after taking a second-half lead, but Chris Lines scored a last-gasp equaliser to snatch a share of the spoils for the Pirates.
Sean Longstaff’s Blackpool are not totally out of the League One play-off picture either, with the United midfielder withdrawn late on as the Seasiders edged a tight encounter against local rivals Fleetwood Town at Bloomfield Road.
Also tasting victory on Saturday were Jack Colback and Stuart Findlay, who played 90 minutes for Nottingham Forest and Kilmarnock respectively. In-form Killie remain firmly in contention for a European place as the Scottish Premiership divides into two for the remainder of the campaign.
Further afield, Rolando Aarons, Henri Saivet and Matz Sels were all in action over the weekend. Aarons started and finished Hellas Verona’s 2-0 defeat to Bologna – an outcome which does little for the Gialloblu’s chances of avoiding an immediate return to Serie B. Saivet’s Sivasspor were beaten 2-1 at home to Fenerbahce in the Turkish Süper Lig, but Sels kept a clean sheet as Anderlecht picked up a crucial 1-0 victory over Club Brugge in Belgium.
