Teenage midfielder Sean Longstaff opened the scoring for Blackpool in their League One clash at Bury, finding the net from range but it was cancelled out by George Miller’s equaliser.
Lewis McNall made an instant impact after coming on for Gateshead at Maidstone United in the FA Trophy, drawing the Heed level with a deflected header. Richard Peniket put Steve Watson’s side 2-1 up, but the Stones secured a replay at the International Stadium on Tuesday thanks to Jai Reason’s late strike.
Ivan Toney scored a 78th-minute winner for Scunthorpe United at Fleetwood Town. Scunthorpe – who had led twice at Highbury Stadium – looked to have been pegged back by the Cod Army, but the on-loan striker despatched the free kick he won for himself 20 yards out.
In the Championship, Jack Colback and Aleksandar Mitrović came face to face as Nottingham Forest travelled to high-flying Fulham. Colback started for Forest while Mitrović came off the bench 55 minutes into the Cottagers’ 2-0 victory.
North of the border, Freddie Woodman made the perfect start to his temporary spell at Aberdeen, keeping a clean sheet as the Dons cruised to a 3-0 win over Hamilton Academical at Pittodrie. Stuart Findlay, meanwhile, came on as a late substitute as Kilmarnock overcame Celtic to move up to sixth in the table.
Further afield, Rolando Aarons made his debut for Hellas Verona, but the Gialloblu – under the guidance of ex-Magpies assistant Fabio Pecchia – were beaten 1-0 at home to Roma. In Turkey, Henri Saivet entered the fray 15 minutes from time as Sivasspor recorded an eye-catching victory over Galatasaray.
Elsewhere, Adam Armstrong played 90 minutes as Blackburn Rovers lost 2-0 to Plymouth Argyle, with Kyle Cameron doing likewise for Queen of the South, who were beaten by the same scoreline against St. Mirren. Dan Barlaser and Jamie Sterry were both involved for Crewe Alexandra, but the Railwaymen were thumped 4-1 by Kevin Nolan’s Notts County.
Finally, Matz Sels started and finished Anderlecht’s 2-2 draw at home to Mechelen in the Belgian First Division, their third game in a row without a win.
