Dan Barlaser’s late free kick gave Rotherham United a 2-1 victory over Blackpool on New Year’s Day.

The Newcastle United midfielder, who is on loan at the AESSEAL New York Stadium until the end of the season, started the League One clash for Paul Warne’s men and set up the opening goal as his lofted corner was nodded home by Michael Smith.

Armand Gnanduillet levelled the scores after the half hour, but with just five minutes remaining, Barlaser stepped up to whip a fine free kick into the top right-hand corner and win it for the Millers.

It was Barlaser’s second goal of his loan spell with Warne’s men, who move up to second in the third tier after what was an impressive showing from the 22-year-old.

It was a largely uneventful start to 2020 for the other Magpies players out on loan, with Sheffield Wednesday’s Jacob Murphy a 64th-minute substitute during their 1-0 home defeat to Hull City in the Championship.

Winger Rolando Aarons didn’t make it off the bench in League One leaders Wycombe’s 1-1 draw at home to Ipswich Town.

And in League Two, full back Liam Gibson played the full 90 minutes as Grimsby Town – who appointed Ian Holloway as their new manager last week – earned a 1-0 win at home to Salford City.

But defender Kelland Watts – who recently returned to Tyneside to continue to work towards full fitness – missed out on Stevenage’s 1-0 loss at Northampton Town.

Another two United players – Swansea City’s Freddie Woodman and Cosenza’s Achraf Lazaar – could feature for their respective loan clubs on Monday.
