Kell Watts will return to Newcastle United in the summer with a League One title winners' medal after Wigan Athletic secured the championship on Saturday

And his Newcastle team-mate Elliot Anderson could yet help Bristol Rovers gain promotion from League Two after he scored a dramatic late winner to secure at least a play-off place for Joey Barton's Gas - and keep them in with a shout of leapfrogging third-placed Northampton going into the final weekend of their season.

Wigan knew that victory at Shrewsbury would see them clinch promotion to the Championship as League One winners, and they obliged with a 3-0 win, with on-loan defender Watts playing the full game. The 22-year-old, who signed a new contract with the Magpies in February, has made 35 appearances in all competitions for the Latics this term.

Meanwhile at the Crown Oil Arena, former Newcastle youngster and Darlington forward Luke Charman scored twice inside the first 20 minutes for Rochdale against Bristol Rovers, but the visitors fought back to win 4-3 thanks to a 95th-minute header - his seventh goal of the campaign - from 19-year-old Anderson.

Elsewhere in League Two, Joe White didn't feature as Hartlepool drew 1-1 with Scunthorpe, while in the Championship, Freddie Woodman was an unused substitute as AFC Bournemouth beat Blackburn 3-0 to take another step towards promotion to the Premier League.

Jeff Hendrick also watched from the bench on Friday as Queens Park Rangers lost 3-1 to Sheffield United on Friday, while on the same evening, Oisín McEntee played the entirety of Morton's 3-0 defeat to Arbroath in the Scottish Championship.
