Having notched the Iron’s winner at Milton Keynes Dons 72 hours earlier, Toney struck either side of the break at Glanford Park to take his tally for the season to 13.

Toney wasn’t the only United loanee at the double.

In France, Florian Thauvin bagged two goals and set up another as Marseille cruised to a 4-0 win over Saint-Etienne at the Stade Vélodrome.

Henri Saivet was involved for Les Verts, who have won just two of their last ten outings in all competitions.

In the Netherlands, Siem de Jong and Tim Krul both started for their respective clubs. The former had already left the pitch by the time ADO Den Haag snatched a late equaliser against his PSV Eindhoven side, while Krul helped AZ Alkmaar to a 2-1 win at Heracles.

Kevin Mbabu racked up another 90 minutes for BSC Young Boys, though Adi Hütter’s side were beaten 1-0 at home to struggling Grasshopper.

Lubo Satka’s FC DAC continued their encouraging run of form with a narrow victory at Trencin. The defender was present throughout.

In the Scottish Premiership, Freddie Woodman, Sean Longstaff and Callum Roberts all started Kilmarnock’s 0-0 draw at home to Ian Cathro’s Hearts.

Elsewhere, Adam Armstrong entered the fray midway through the second half as Barnsley drew 1-1 at home to Brentford in the Championship, while Paul Woolston’s Blyth Spartans – already assured of promotion to the National League North – thumped Whitby Town 5-1 at Croft Park.

Finally, in League Two, Macaulay Gillesphey returned to action for Carlisle United after a lengthy absence through injury, playing 82 minutes as Keith Curle's side drew 1-1 at home to Stevenage.

Neither Alex Gilliead nor Emmanuel Riviere figured for their respective clubs.
