Luke Charman made his debut for loan club Accrington Stanley on Tuesday night – and set up a goal to help John Coleman’s men earn a 2-1 Checkatrade Trophy victory over West Bromwich Albion Under-21s.

The Newcastle United forward, who is on loan at the Wham Stadium until the end of the season, started for the first time for the League One side and almost opened the scoring early on when his header was cleared off the line by the Baggies’ George Harmon.

After seeing another effort deflected past the post in the first half, Charman made his presence felt once again after the break as he made a telling contribution to Accy’s opener. It was the 20-year-old’s backheel which found Jordan Clark, who fired home four minutes after the restart.

Jonathan Leko’s leveller restored parity but Coleman’s men continued to battle, and after Charman had blasted over his side won it in the dying moments, courtesy of Ross Sykes’ stoppage time header.

Fellow Stanley loanee Dan Barlaser didn’t feature, but frontman Charman completed the full 90 minutes as the hosts secured their progress from Northern Group C.
