Newcastle United Women defender Lia Cataldo has signed a new contract with the club.

The 24-year-old full-back signed for the Magpies from Crystal Palace in January 2024 and has since gone onto make 20 appearances in all competitions for Becky Langley's team, including ten this season.

Before arriving in the North East last year, Cataldo had played for Arsenal Women, London City Lionesses, Leicester City and Bristol City, helping the latter to the Women's Championship title in the 2022/23 season.

On signing her new contract, Cataldo said: "I'm absolutely delighted to sign a new deal. Since I joined the club last year, it's continued to get better and we've all become more ambitious.

"This season, we've shown that we can compete at this level and I'm excited to be on this journey with such an amazing football club.

"I've been here for over a year now and I feel that I have already contributed a lot to the team but I feel as though I've still got so much to give. I'm really excited to see what the future holds."

On Cataldo signing a new deal, head coach Becky Langley said: "Lia's been brilliant for us since she joined. She's a leader, as well as being a competitive and feisty defender which we like and suits us as a football club.

"She has the right attitude and has been excellent in her one-on-one defending. We wish she had been fit for more of the season, but to have her available now at this crucial stage of the season is fantastic.

"You could arguably say that Lia took a backwards step to take two forward, and we really appreciated her taking that risk by dropping into tier three last season. Our ambitions were always to take Lia with us into the Championship and she has performed really well for us."
