Newcastle United Women suffered their first league defeat of the season on Sunday, when the Tyneside team were narrowly beaten 1-0 away to Liverpool Feds Women

The result leaves Becky Langley's side fifth in The FA Women's National League Division One North, with three wins from their opening five fixtures.

Reacting to the defeat, Langley said: "It goes without saying how disappointed I am. For 30 minutes, I felt as though we were without doubt the stronger team.

"Overall, I think we need to be better in the final third - you have to capitalise when you are on top in matches like these."

Despite the disappointment, the Newcastle Women manager maintained that her side should not be disheartened by defeat to the league leaders.

"The fact that we lost the game by such a small margin shows us just how close we actually are," she said.

"Of course, the defeat hurts a lot, but it gives us extra motivation to go back on the training pitch and improve."

Langley also outlined that despite the defeat, her side can take positives from their performance and carry them into future fixtures.

She said: "We were very hard to break down, and their goal came from a set piece. Without Rachel Darbyshire in goal for their side, it may well have been a very different scoreline.

"We had many chances of our own and limited them to just seven shots, so there is plenty for us to take away and carry into our game against Durham Cestria."

The Lady Magpies face local rivals Durham Cestria in their next fixture on Sunday, 3rd October (kick-off 2pm BST), with Langley indicating she expects a reaction from her side.

"I am not the sort of person to who will allow one defeat to be a hangover," she said. "We will be preparing intensely for our match against Durham Cestria on Sunday, and we want to bounce back immediately with a win."

The defeat to Liverpool Feds Women disrupted the Lady Magpies' otherwise scintillating away form this season.

Langley outlined the importance of getting results on the road, and the impact it will have on their prospects of success come the end of the season.

"Away fixtures are extremely demanding," she added. "But it is extremely important that we get results when we are not at home. We had a 13-hour day on Sunday, and we need to dust ourselves down and go again."

Newcastle United Women have now played five league matches, and while Langley's side have had a great start to the season, the manager reiterated her message from the beginning of the 2021/22 campaign.

"We are really just focusing one game at a time," she said. "We have long-term targets of course, but focusing fixture by fixture, week by week, allows us to maintain our standards and not get ahead of ourselves.

"We have a great group of players and staff, and we will strive for better next week."
