At 37, Kavanagh is one of the younger officials currently on the Premier League circuit. He has been in the top flight since 2017, when he debuted in West Bromwich Albion's 1-0 defeat to Southampton at the Hawthorns.

Prior to that, Kavanagh - who hails from Ashton-under-Lyne - was a National League official for two years from 2012 and an EFL regular between 2014 and 2017, making a first Wembley appearance at the end of 2016/17 as a fourth official in the League One play-off final.

In 2019, he was added to FIFA's list of international referees, and two years later he oversaw the Championship play-off final between Brentford and Swansea City.

Sunday's fixture will be just Kavanagh's second game involving Newcastle this term, following last month's clash at Brentford which the Magpies won 2-1. On that occasion, he booked both Sven Botman and Alexander Isak.
