The incredible flag displays that have become an eye-catching feature across the Gallowgate End at St. James’ Park will be mirrored in the Leazes End this Saturday when a second group launches its inaugural display.

Launched to coincide with the club’s 125th anniversary fixture, Leazes Flags will roll out its first collection of flags and banners to greet the players when Newcastle United host Leicester City in the Premier League.

The group spoke to nufc.co.uk to give fans a feel for what’s to come...

Q: Welcome, Leazes Flags! Tell us about the group and where the idea came from…

"Leazes Flags has been inspired by the brilliance of what has happened at the Gallowgate End. After the October home game against Liverpool, a few of us thought ‘why not have that in the Leazes End?’

"We connected with the Wor Flags group to make sure they had no objections and to see if they could offer us any advice. They fully backed us and have been a great help already.

"The Leazes Flag group now consists of more than a hundred people who have put forward a desire to help or volunteer in various ways and we want to continue growing. Ultimately, it will only be successful if as many people as possible get involved.

"Since launching, we now have over 6,000 followers across Facebook and Twitter, which has been very encouraging indeed.

"We then met with the club, who were also very receptive to this idea, enabling us to organise displays across the entire section of the Leazes End. We could not be happier.”

Q: What are your aims?

"Our aims are very simple. The primary one is to help to enhance the atmosphere at St. James’ Park, turning it into a cauldron of noise and colour.

"We want to encourage all supporters to get involved and give this a huge collective effort.

"We’ve seen our fans being the 12th man on so many occasions and we hope this will continue to show our players and manager how much we care and, in turn, inspire them."

Q: How can supporters get involved?

"We essentially need three simple levels of support to make this a huge success:

"We are looking for any volunteers to help in any or, if possible, all of those areas.

"This type of project benefits everyone, but can only work if enough kind, passionate people volunteer in the activities above.

"We would love to find more likeminded people who care enough about improving the matchday experience and the atmosphere.

"We are hoping this article reaches more people than we’ve been able to thus far and hope to hear from more fans about joining the group and being part of something very special."

Q: Tell us about your first display…

"Our very first display will take place on Saturday 9th December – the club’s 125th birthday.

"We didn’t expect it to move as quickly as it has but we have rallied, along with our donors, and managed to raise enough to display a superb collection of flags on our first outing.

"We have, of course, kept with the theme of the day – 125 years of Newcastle United.

"We are planning to have over 90 flags in the Leazes End. Our three main, central flags are huge with the 125th anniversary crest in the middle and tributes to both Rafa Benítez and Sir Bobby Robson.

"To complement those, we have flags spelling out ‘1892’, with players like Peter Beardsley and Alan Shearer featured. We also have over 40 players shirt flags, 35 black and white flags and some surprises as well.

"We must stress none of this would even be possible without the financial support of our fellow supporters. They have been nothing short of special.

"The donations have been flooding in from the first day we started and that continues to this day. We are very grateful."
