Santiago Muñoz was on target for Mexico Under-21s on Sunday as the Newcastle United youngster boosted his country’s hopes of progressing to the knockout round of the Maurice Revello Tournament.

The teenage frontman, who is on loan at St. James' Park from Santos Laguna, lined up for the Group B clash against Indonesia at the Stade de Lattre-de-Tassigny in Aubagne, and put his team 1-0 up ten minutes before the end of the first half from the spot.

Muñoz was tripped in the area after getting to the ball first, but picked himself up to coolly dispatch the spot-kick himself.

Mexico doubled their lead in added time at the end of the contest, securing a second-placed finish in their group – but they will have to wait before until Monday's concluding fixtures in Group C to find out whether they will progress to the knockout stage.

Elsewhere, Emil Krafth got 90 minutes under his belt for Sweden on Sunday, but they were beaten 2-1 by Norway in the UEFA Nations League.

Erling Haaland’s brace won it for the visitors in Stockholm, with Anthony Elanga netting a late consolation for the hosts after Krafth had picked up a yellow card.

Fabian Schär was also in Nations League action over the weekend, but his Switzerland side had a day to forget as they were thrashed 4-0 by Portugal.

Cristiano Ronaldo's double, added to strikes from William Carvalho and Joao Cancelo, sealed Portugal's thumping win, with Magpies defender Schär also receiving a booking.

There was a run-out for Chris Wood, too, as New Zealand were beaten 1-0 by Peru in a friendly in Barcelona.

The forward played the first 70 minutes for the All Whites before being withdrawn just after Gianluca Lapadula's winner as his country continue to prepare for their intercontinental play-off ahead of this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

Elliot Anderson also featured on Sunday, playing the full 90 minutes for Scotland Under-21s as they drew 0-0 with Belgium.

The United youngster did his best to break the deadlock in the European Championship qualifier in Sint-Truden, but couldn't find the target with a late attempt which flashed just wide of the upright.
