Eddie Howe made ten changes to his starting line-up but the Magpies were still able to see off Pep Guardiola's side, the reigning champions of Europe and eight-time League Cup winners.
Lewis Hall, Tino Livramento and Lewis Miley were handed their first starts for the club, while Paul Dummett came in for his first appearance in 13 months. Newcastle were largely second best in the first period, but maintained their shape defensively to keep out the visitors before finding another gear in the second half.
They deservedly took the lead through Alexander Isak and rarely looked like surrendering their advantage. Newcastle's reward was an away tie at Old Trafford against Manchester United, who beat them in last season's final at Wembley, but after this result and performance, Howe's men need fear nobody.
