The Wiltshire-based whistler has refereed almost 30 games in all competitions this season, but this will be his first in the top flight.

Hooper officiated four of United’s games in the Championship last term, including their opening-day defeat at Fulham. He made one trip to St. James’ Park, overseeing the Magpies’ 3-1 win over Brentford a year past October.

This time out, he has issued 87 yellow cards and dismissed three players. Only once has he come through a game without booking anyone.

Hooper will be assisted by Gary Beswick and Lee Betts on Wednesday, with Neil Swarbrick the fourth official.
