It will be United's first outing since their agonising defeat to City's local rivals in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley last Sunday, with Hooper selected to take charge of his third game involving Newcastle this term.

Neither of the previous two have ended in defeat for Eddie Howe's side, with the 40-year-old refereeing their 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest on the opening day back in August and the 0-0 draw with Leeds United on New Year's Eve. Both games were played at St. James' Park.

Swindon-born Hooper has been a Select Group 1 official since 2018, forming part of the core group which referees top flight matches. Interestingly, he is yet to issue a red card in any of his 19 outings across the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup so far this season.
