Harrington - whose grandfather played for Hartlepool United - has already refereed a United game this month, having taken charge of the 1-1 home draw with Everton almost four weeks ago, in which he booked three Toffees players at St. James' Park.

He became a Select Group 1 official in 2021 and made his Premier League bow in December of that year. So far this term, in addition to his top flight appointments, he has overseen games in the Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Championship.

Harrington - who began refereeing as a youngster in the Teesside Junior Football Alliance - has issued three red cards in his 19 games so far this term, with his most recent outing coming in Leeds United's 4-3 win at Middlesbrough in the second tier on Monday.
