Luke Charman expressed his satisfaction in scoring the winning goal as Newcastle United Under-23s earned a 1-0 away win against Hull City in the Premier League Cup.

The striker netted from the penalty spot in the latter stages of the Group C clash to earn the young Magpies, who reached last year's final, maximum points in their opening cup fixture.

And the Newcastle-born forward admitted his relief in hitting the target at the East Riding County FA after a disappointing evening against Premier League 2 opponents Swansea on Monday.

Charman told nufc.co.uk: "As soon as I saw the referee point to the spot, I ran straight over to the ball. After the Swansea game at St. James' Park, I felt I should have scored two, if not three goals. I was frustrated in myself that I didn't score and it was a good chance to get one in.

"I saw the ball go towards the keeper's hand but when it hit the net, it was more of a relief than happiness because I know I should be scoring more goals recently so it was just important to get a goal no matter how it goes in and carry on from here."

Following the win, Newcastle's second-string turn their attention to another cup campaign as Neil Redfearn's side face Shrewsbury Town on Tuesday night in the Leasing.com Trophy group stages.

And after recording a maiden clean sheet of the campaign, Charman feels the positive result can set his side in good stead for facing senior opposition on Tuesday night.

The 21-year-old added: "It probably wasn't the best we've played all season but sometimes we play better and don't get the results so getting the win is the most important thing, especially in the cup. It wasn't the best pitch but we dealt with it quite well and have come away deserved winners.

"It was quite a scrappy game but I thought we controlled it well although there was not many chances.

"It's good to get a clean sheet although it was a bit squeaky bum time towards the end with a few fouls given away outside the box that weren't necessary. I thought we defended well in the game and didn't give them many clear-cut chances. We played well with the ball playing out from the back and managed to get the goal, which is really good for us."
