Newcastle's leading scorer is on three-man shortlist for league player of the year

The striker has scored 21 times for Newcastle this season and is one of three players shortlisted for the award; Leeds frontman Chris Wood and Brighton and Hove Albion's Anthony Knockaert are also in the frame.

Gayle is the Magpies' leading goalscorer and Rafa Benitez's side are currently top of the table.

The annual EFL awards will honour players, managers and supporters, as well as highlighting some of the work being undertaken by clubs and trusts in communities up and down the country. Judged by panels of leading experts from the football and media industry, they will take place in London on Sunday, 9th April.

EFL Chief Executive Shaun Harvey said: "It's been an exciting and action-packed 12 months for the EFL both on and off the pitch. There have been some incredible individual and team performances across the three divisions, entertaining the millions of fans who follow the EFL week in, week out.

"Off the pitch our clubs continue to have a positive and lasting impact in their local communities, using the power of football to deliver life-changing programmes and activities.

"The EFL Awards are a fantastic way to recognise the achievements of clubs, players, backroom staff and fans and I would like to personally congratulate everyone who has been nominated and wish them all the best on the night itself."
