The 26-year-old scored six goals last month, including a hat-trick against Birmingham, and now has 19 for the season.

He's been named on a four-man shortlist for the award; Wolves midfielder Dave Edwards, Barnsley forward Sam Winnall and Brighton's former Darlington goalkeeper David Stockdale are the other players in the frame.

Edwards scored four times in December and Winnall - like Gayle - grabbed six goals, while Stockdale made a string of important saves for the Seagulls.

The winner will be announced on Friday. The judging panel comprises Sky Sports’ EFL expert Don Goodman, League Managers’ Association Director Olaf Dixon and Sky Bet Football Trading Manager Paul Lowery.
