Garang Kuol's spectacular substitute appearance almost rescued a point for Central Coast Mariners on Sunday as the youngster signed off for the World Cup in style

The Australian teenager, who was named in his country's squad for the finals this month, was part of the Mariners side who went down 3-2 to Macarthur in the A-league over the weekend - despite his valiant efforts to snatch a draw.

The Coasties had gone two goals behind after strikes from Al Hassan Toure and Jonathan Aspropotamitis at the Central Coast Stadium, with Kuol named on the bench.

But the frontman was summoned as his side sought a way back into the contest and Kuol - who has yet to start a senior competitive match in his nascent career - made a stunning impact, winning and scoring a penalty with 25 miniutes remaining before blasting home a leveller from a tight angle to draw his side level with 72 minutes on the clock.

They couldn't hold on for a draw, though, as Jed Drew's stoppage time effort won it for visitors Macarthur, but Kuol's impact on his final outing before heading to Qatar for the World Cup has buoyed Socceroos supporters.

He will link up with United in January, having finalised a deal to join the Magpies in September.
