The second annual Foundation 1892 Cup will take place at Newcastle United Academy on Monday afternoon with 128 local primary school children participating in the tournament.

Seven primary schools from Tyneside will field eight-a-side football teams, comprising Year 3 and Year 4 children aged seven to nine.

Each of these schools will be represented by both a boys' and a girls' team.

A further two schools will each send one team of eight to participate in the tournament, which kicks off at Little Benton at 2pm.

The new 2017/18 PUMA home kit is being provided for all children by Sports Direct and Newcastle United.

United manager Rafa Benítez will join the children at the end of the tournament to award the winner’s trophies before the day is rounded off with a celebration barbecue, courtesy of the club.

The Foundation 1892 Cup aims to further foster and enhance ties between the football club and the community.

Newcastle United Foundation works with over 200 local primary, secondary and special educational needs schools each year.

Head of Newcastle United Foundation, Kate Bradley, said: “We are delighted to be holding the second Foundation 1892 Cup at the Academy, and it’s all the more special to have Rafa joining us today.

“His commitment to the Foundation has been amazing and we’re thrilled to have his continued support.

“It’s a great day for school children we work with to experience playing football at the very heart of Newcastle United’s training facility.

“Thank you to Newcastle United, the Academy, Sodexo, Sports Direct, Rafa Benítez and the attending schools for their support of what will be a great day.”

Please note that this event is not open to the public but you can follow coverage on the club’s social media accounts.
