Young defender joins Torquay following Newcastle exit

The Scotland under-21 international had been with Newcastle since the age of nine but was not offered a new contract this summer.

And he has now joined the Gulls, who were relegated from the Vanarama National League last term.

Head coach Gary Owers told the official Torquay United website: "We've tracked him through the summer. He's a left-footed central defender who is a big strong lad with a good pedigree having been up at Newcastle.

"I've been searching for left-footers to get us more balanced as a team. They are few and far between.

"We think he is a player that can progress his career by coming here and getting some games under his belt."

Cameron had previously spent time on loan with York City, Newport County, Workington and Queen of the South.

Meanwhile, winger Alex Gilliead has joined Shrewsbury Town after his Newcastle contract expired.
