The Magpies’ under-23s beat Rangers 1-0 in the final of the two-day competition on Sunday, having made it out of a group including the hosts, Hong Kong FC, Newcastle Jets and the Scottish side.
That preceded knockout stage victories over Kashima Antlers, on penalties, and Leicester City, before Callum Roberts’ winner saw off the Gers in the final.
And Fernández was in influential form for United, playing his part in helping his side make it out of their group before tucking away a penalty in the 7-6 shoot-out win over Japanese side Kashima in the last eight.
The 20-year-old then bagged a brace against the Foxes in the semi-final as the Magpies emerged 4-3 winners thanks to Roberts’ golden goal, before helping the young side see off Rangers to lift the silverware.
And Fernández’s contribution saw him make it a double celebration, as he was named player of the tournament after Newcastle’s final win.
