Dundee-born Smith, who worked alongside manager Joe Harvey when the Magpies lifted the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in 1969, spent four years on the coaching staff at St. James' Park.
After concluding a playing career at Burnley, Brighton and Bristol City, Harvey brought him to Tyneside in 1967, with the Fairs Cup triumph after the two-legged final win over Újpesti Dózsa the highlight of his spell with the Magpies.
Smith was a popular figure at United prior to his departure to Arsenal in 1971, and he later went into management, with the Scot enjoying spells in charge of Mansfield Town, Southend United, Plymouth Argyle, Dundee and Torquay United.
In his later years, the former full back settled in the Plymouth area, remaining active in football at grassroots level. He passed away in Skipton last week.
The thoughts of everyone at Newcastle United are with Dave's family and friends.
