And after the England international's fine double in Friday night's win at Leicester City, few would bet against him reaching that milestone.
Having started his career with hometown club Coventry City and spending time on loan with non-league Kettering Town and Tamworth before joining AFC Bournemouth - then in the Championship - he had to wait until August 2015 before making his Premier League debut.
Wilson's first goals in the top flight came when he hit a hat-trick for the Cherries against West Ham that same month and after hitting 41 Premier League goals for the South Coast club, his 50th came when he scored the first of his two goals for Newcastle at Everton in January.
He has now received an award - a presentation box containing a special medallion and plaque engraved with the details of his achievement - from the Premier League and Coca-Cola to mark the feat and told nufc.co.uk: "For me growing up as a youngster, watching Match of the Day and watching the Premier League, to now have an award for scoring 50 goals in that league so far is obviously an amazing achievement for myself and something I never thought I'd do.
"The aim now is to try and get to 100 before I finish my career. I always want more, I'm always trying to achieve more and better myself and now it's about trying to get another 47 goals to get to the one hundred club."
If his dream of being a regular Premier League goalscorer looked unlikely when he was turning out in the Blue Square Premier (now the National League) less than ten years ago, he also had to overcome two anterior cruciate ligament injuries during his time at Bournemouth.
"Having played in non-league, the Premier League seemed such a long way away and to ultimately get 50-plus goals in that league is an honour, really," he added. "Now the key is trying to build on that.
"Did I ever think I would get 50 goals in the Premier League? Probably not, although I knew I'd be a Premier League player.
"But I feel also that I would have got to 50 a lot quicker having not had setbacks throughout the journey. I've missed almost two seasons with injury - there's goals there you could have had and I would have been a lot closer to 100. But at the end of the day you take what's given to you; that was my path.
Wilson celebrates his 50th Premier League goal - he's since added three more to his tally despite missing two months with a hamstring injury
"I've got a long, long way to go to one hundred but I've got many, many more years left in me and hopefully this club will help me do that."
Wilson - who has four England caps so far and scored on his international debut against USA at Wembley in November 2018 - admitted that he treasures awards like the one he has received for his 50th Premier League goal.
He said: "I have kind of a trophy room, with matchballs in cases, player of the month awards, man of the matches and end-of-season awards throughout my career.
"They're my pride and joy. I look at them, and how far I've come. Sometimes when you're in football, you forget to reflect on how far you have actually come and what you've actually achieved so far.
"For me, I've not won cups, I've not won leagues - other than the Championship, I've not done massive things within the game for club and country - but these little sentimental ones, they're priceless really and I just want to keep adding to them.
"Like I say, being from where I'm from, growing up I didn't think that I would get this far in life, really. It's definitely something that I treasure and I make sure that I look after them and put them in a safe place, definitely."
