Eddie Howe's side had hoped to avenge their 1-0 defeat to Edin Terzic's men at St. James' Park in matchday three, but instead a depleted Magpies side suffered defeat in Germany as forward Fullkrug's close-range finish was followed by Brandt's second half clincher after a swift counter-attack.

Joelinton had a chance to equalise at 1-0 but couldn't take it in a game where clear-cut chances for United - who made Lewis Miley their youngest-ever player in European competition with a late cameo off the bench - were few and far between.

The hosts, who had lost only one of their previous 16 European fixtures at home, started well. Brandt fired over and and Fullkrug saw a snapshot beaten away by Pope, who then had to be alert to keep out Karim Adeyemi's low shot moments later.

But just after the halfway point in the first period, some neat play on the edge of the box brought about the opener. Marcel Sabitzer was at the heart of it, flicking towards Fullkrug and latching on to the big frontman's knockdown before cutting the ball back. Fullkrug arrived right on cue in the box, turning the ball high into the net and leaving Pope with no chance in front of the Yellow Wall.

United responded well to the setback, and began to apply some pressure. Before the break, Jamaal Lascelles directed Kieran Trippier's corner towards Joelinton, whose powerful header would have brought the equaliser had it not been for Gregor Kobel's intervention in the Dortmund goal.

Miguel Almirón and Anthony Gordon, both starters in the weekend Premier League win over Arsenal, were introduced by Howe at half time as he looked to give his charges a greater threat in the final third. But it was Adeyemi who had the first sight of goal after the restart, firing at Pope once again, before Newcastle shifted through the gears; Kobel got an important touch to Tino Livramento's cross to prevent Joelinton from tapping home and Almirón shunted an effort wide.

Then, with 55 minutes gone, the Magpies carved out their best chance, sandwiched in between two Brandt strikes that Pope tipped away. Livramento's cross from the right was perfect and Joelinton's run to meet it was well-timed, but his downward header flashed past the upright.

Willock followed that up with a low shot that Kobel saved but with 12 minutes left, Dortmund wrapped up the points. It was a breakwaway effort, which resulted in Brandt and Adeyemi in a two-v-one situation, with Livramento the deepest defender for Newcastle. The former opted against playing in the latter and instead took the shot on himself after getting into the box, rolling beyond Pope to wrap up the win for the Bundesliga outfit.
