He was 82. Born in Ashington in September 1936, Bob joined United from Fatfield Juniors in 1954, going on to make 20 appearances for the Magpies in the right-back position after debuting against Burnley in 1957.

His appearances were limited due to the fine form of Northern ireland international Dick Keith and Bob moved on to Darlington in 1962 following a brief loan spell at Cambridge City.
