The Hornets are struggling to stay afloat, and with falling gates, a lack of sponsors and increased costs, there is a real possibility that the final whistle could blow on 105 years of footballing history.

Next week, though, a Magpies XI will make the short trip to the Hebburn Sports and Social Ground in a bid to bring in some much-needed cash.

Beardsley himself will take part in a Q&A session at the Hornets’ clubhouse after the game, and the United legend is hopeful that football supporters across the region will turn out in force.

“Hebburn are delighted we’re taking a team,” he told nufc.co.uk. “And for our kids, it’s great. As I keep telling them, they’re judged on matches.

“You might be the best trainer in the world, but matches are what you’re judged on. The more matches you play, the better.

“It’ll also be against men, so physically it’s something different. It’ll be a good thing for them to get involved.

“Hopefully Hebburn will get a brilliant crowd – that’s the most important thing. The score won’t be the end of the world either way. Obviously, we want to win, because we’ve lost to non-league teams before, but it won’t be the be-all and end-all.

“It’s about having a good night, the fans enjoying it, and hopefully raising some money for Hebburn.”

Admission for Tuesday's game is priced at just £5 for adults and £3 for concessions. Accompanied children can attend for free.
