Newcastle United Under-23s followed up their success in the Whitby Town Challenge Cup with a convincing 4-2 victory over Ashington on Tuesday night.

The Magpies lifted the trophy at Whitby’s Turnbull Ground on Saturday after beating AZ Alkmaar 4-1 in the final of the tournament, having reached that stage thanks to a 2-1 victory over Celtic last Thursday.

And their fine pre-season form continued against the Colliers, as two goals from a somewhat unlikely source helped them on their way to an emphatic win.

Defender Owen Bailey bagged a brace for Peter Beardsley’s side, who had a youthful look to their line-up, with a number of younger players – such as Ben Kitchen, Yannick Aziakonou and Mo Sangare – all getting more valuable game time under their belts.

Winger Adam Wilson and forward Lewis McNall were also on target for United, though they had to withstand a second half fightback from Steve Harmison’s men, as goals from Lee McAndrew and Tony Stephenson reducing the deficit for the Northern League outfit.

Newcastle United: Paul Woolston (Nathan Harker 46), Craig Spooner, Ben Kitchen (Lewis Cass 60), Matty Longstaff (Kelland Watts 46), Yannick Aziakonou, Owen Bailey, Mackenzie Heaney, Mo Sangare (Matty Longstaff 85), Lewis McNall, Juanito (Tyrique Bartlett 60), Adam Wilson (Callum Smith 46).
