A squad of Newcastle United Academy graduates reunited at St. James’ Park on Sunday 1st September, thanks to an Alumni Programme designed to support former players throughout their careers.

The academy alumni event saw 10 former Magpies invited to the Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur, providing a perfect backdrop to reconnect with former teammates and coaches.

Regular events are hosted through the academy’s Alumni Programme, ensuring players remain part of the Newcastle United family, long after their playing days at the club have concluded.

The official Alumni Programme was established in 2023 to create a network of those that have worn the black and white stripes. It has since become a dynamic addition to the ‘aftercare’ offered to academy players, assisting the transition into the next stage of their young careers.

In the past year, more than 50 academy graduates have signed up to the innovative scheme. Members unite from a diverse range of industries, with alumni currently occupying roles ranging from football coaches and analysts to a firefighter, trainee pilot and engineer.

“The philosophy of our academy extends well beyond time spent on the pitch”, commented Steve Harper, Newcastle United’s Academy Director.

“Our Alumni Programme offers an ongoing resource for graduates, who will benefit from their ever-lasting connection with the academy, regardless of where their careers have taken them since. The programme plays an important role in maintaining the bond between former teammates, while reigniting their sense of belonging as part of the Newcastle United family.”

The Alumni Programme accompanies core aftercare support provided by the academy, which includes access to PFA funding, links with prospective employers, scholarship assistance and coaching opportunities through the Newcastle United Foundation.

Owen Bailey, former Newcastle United Under-23s captain, said: “The Alumni Programme is a great way to remain part of the club. I spent such a long period of my life with the academy, so I enjoy staying connected with former teammates and staff that have played an important role in my career. Through the programme, it’s nice to feel like you’re still part of the club.”

Former Academy players wishing to join the Alumni Programme should contact the club’s Academy Safeguarding & Wellbeing Manager, Julie Smith, on: [email protected]
