The Magpies, back in the Champions League after two long decades, headed to Italy to face AC Milan in their opening Group F fixture at San Siro, scene of United's 2-2 draw against the Rossoneri's city rivals Inter Milan back in 2003.
It was an emotional occasion for the travelling Newcastle fans - as well as some of the players, with three of the starting line-up having been Magpies supporters themselves in their youth.
And the game itself was as engaging as goalless draws go as Eddie Howe's side, inspired by goalkeeper Nick Pope, turned in a brilliant defensive display to keep the Serie A side at bay - and could even have nicked the points at the end when Sean Longstaff saw his stoppage-time effort superbly tipped over.
As ever, Serena Taylor was there to bring nufc.co.uk this gallery from United's first Champions League adventure of the campaign.
