A ball-playing centre half, Schär signed for Newcastle United from Deportivo de La Coruña in July 2018.
His career began with hometown club Wil 1900 before linking up with Basel in 2012, where he helped the RotBlau to a hat-trick of Swiss Super League titles.
After a first St. James' Park outing in 2012 - where he represented his country against Gabon in the Olympic Games - he had spells with Hoffenheim and Deportivo and after joining the Magpies permanently, he bagged his first goals in English football in January 2019, netting an unlikely brace in United's 3-0 Premier League victory over Cardiff City.
Stylish and solid, Schär has become a key part of Howe's squad since the head coach's arrival in 2021, with his centre back partnership with Sven Botman crucial to United's terrific 2022/23 campaign, which saw the club finish fourth and qualify for the Champions League. His displays the following season earned him a nomination for the Premier League Fan Team of the Season.
In 2024, following the European Championships in Germany, he announced his retirement from international football having amassed 86 caps and scored eight goals for Switzerland.
