Joe White is determined for Newcastle United Under-21s to record a third successive Premier League 2 victory ahead of Friday's trip to Middlesbrough (kick-off 7pm BST).

The young Magpies return to league action on Friday night when they travel to County Durham to face their Boro counterparts at Heritage Park (kick-off 7pm BST) aiming for a third consecutive league victory after wins against Derby County and Nottingham Forest's second-string.

White, who made his Newcastle first-team debut during a pre-season friendly against Rotherham United in July 2021, is hoping the squad can build on their positive displays in recent weeks and continue their winning form.

The 19-year-old, who signed a new three-year contract with Newcastle in March, told nufc.co.uk: "With the game being a derby, there is a lot of excitement. They (Middlesbrough) have started the season quite well but, away from home, we want to go there and ultimately win.

"It's quite big to come out on top against local rivals, just like the games against Sunderland. It's about bragging rights and whoever gets the three points. When you go into league games after winning the previous ones, you just want to keep on doing it.

"I've been a part of the team which beat Middlesbrough and Sunderland last season and it's a really good feeling so we want to replicate that.

"With the three defeats in a row at the start of the season, we've shown a lot of character and a lot of things have been adjusted and improved. We've worked on a lot of things and the last two league games and Papa John's Trophy matches, there has been signs that the team is looking back to its best."

White, who joined the Magpies' Academy in 2016, completed his first full 90 minutes of the 2022/23 campaign during Newcastle's Papa John's Trophy defeat against League One side Barnsley last week.

The attacking midfielder expressed his disappointment in facing a number of week on the sidelines  but believes he is nearing full fitness after sustaining an injury during pre-season.

The Cumbrian youngster, who made his professional debut in February whilst on loan at League Two side Hartlepool United, added: "I think I'm in a good place but there is more to give. I'm not 100 per cent yet but I think my past two performances, I nearly got my first 90 minutes of the season against Forest and then played the full game against Barnsley.

"I am getting there but it has been a long and frustrating process but I'm nearly there. I'm training with the first-team, which has been a massive help to get my fitness levels up as quickly as possible, and try to get as many games and 90 minutes under my belt."
