Eddie Howe's side will travel to the City Ground for a ninth consecutive League Cup tie against Premier League opposition after the draw was made on Wednesday night following Middlesbrough's televised first round win against Leeds United at Elland Road.
Caroline Barker hosted the draw, with United one of the 13 Premier League clubs not competing in European competitions to enter the tournament at this stage, along with Burnley and Luton Town from the Sky Bet Championship.
Newcastle have met Forest on five occasions in the League Cup, with the Tricky Trees winning in round two during consecutive campaigns in 2017 and 2018 but the Magpies were victorious during the 2011/12 campaign as Fabricio Coloccini's 120th minute header sealed a dramatic 4-3 win in Nottingham.
The Carabao Cup remains regionalised in the early rounds with the draw split into a southern and northern section until the third round.
Second round ties will take place in the week commencing Monday, 26th August. The date and ticket details will be confirmed on newcastleunited.com in due course.
