Newcastle United have been handed an away draw against AFC Wimbledon in the third round of this season’s Carabao Cup.

Eddie Howe's side will travel to Plough Lane to face the League Two outfit, the Magpies' eighth successive away tie in domestic cup competitions, after the draw was made on Wednesday night following the Magpies' televised second round victory against Nottingham Forest at the City Ground.

Mark Chapman hosted the draw, with United one of 25 winners from Round Two along with the seven Premier League Clubs in UEFA competitions entering at the third round stage.

The two sides, who will meet each other for the first time since January 2000, have went head-to-head in the League Cup on two occasions, with the London-based outfit winning 2-1 in both of their third round ties against the Magpies during the 1987/88 and 1993/94 campaigns.

For the main draw, two separate bowls were utilised as Bowl 1 consisted of the six UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League clubs while Bowl 2 consisted of the remaining 26 clubs. The UEFA Conference League, a competition Chelsea FC could be participating in this season, is due to begin in October and therefore had no impact on the Carabao Cup third round draw.

A pre-draw took place prior to Newcastle's second round tie against Nottingham Forest to determine the home/away positioning of the six Clubs in Bowl 1 for the first six ties of the main draw.

The main draw was conducted following the conclusion of the game at the City Ground, with the first six ties drawn by alternating between one club from Bowl 1 and one club from Bowl 2, with the home/away positioning of the club from Bowl 1 already pre-determined in the earlier draw.

Once the six Clubs from Bowl 1 had been drawn, the remaining ten ties were drawn from Bowl 2 only. From this round of the competition, the draw is no longer split into northern and southern sections.

Third round ties will take place in the weeks commencing Monday, 16th and Monday, 23rd September, with fixtures in the UEFA Champions League (W/C 16 September) and Europa League (W/C 23 September) also scheduled during this period.

The date and ticket details will be confirmed on newcastleunited.com in due course.
