At White Hart Lane
Tottenham Hotspur 1 (Dier 39)
Newcastle United 2 (Mitrovic 74, Perez 90)
Aleksandar Mitrovic and Ayoze Perez stepped off the substitutes' bench to fire Newcastle United to a huge Barclays Premier League victory at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The Magpies deservedly trailed at half-time following Eric Dier's header, but turned the game on its head after the break with a stunning second half performance and a goal apiece from their two striking replacements.
Spurs dominated the first period and the visitors had goalkeeper Rob Elliot to thank for keeping them within touching distance as he produced excellent saves from Harry Kane and Erik Lamela - twice.
However, the stopper could do nothing to prevent Dier glancing home Christian Eriksen's corner to break the deadlock with the interval approaching.
United refused to to lie down, though, and roared out of the traps in the second half. Papiss Cisse went close before his replacement, Mitrovic, levelled by pouncing on a loose ball after Hugo Lloris failed to hold Chancel Mbemba's header.
And then, in injury-time, the Serbian striker turned provider, flicking on into the path of Perez, who fired under Lloris to snatch all three points.
It was a third successive league victory at White Hart Lane for United and back-to-back wins for the first time in 2015.
With less than a minute on the clock goalkeeper Rob Elliot was called into action, diving full-length to his right and making a fine one-handed stop to keep out Kane's low shot.
Spurs dominated the early exchanges but United looked solid defensively and, that Kane effort aside, the hosts had to wait until the 18th minute for their next opening - a long-range strike from Eriksen which flew wide of the upright.
And having weathered the storm of Tottenham pressure, Newcastle set about trying to impose themselves on proceedings.
Georginio Wijnaldum was growing into the game and just past the half-hour mark his skill and persistence down the left teed up Paul Dummett for a deep cross that Papiss Cisse could only head off target.
But the hosts responded and Elliot made an outstanding stop to keep out Lamela. The Argentine forward bent a first-time shot towards the top corner from the edge of the area, and it looked a certain goal until the intervention of Elliot's right hand, clawing the ball away to safety.
The same pair were at it again seconds later, with the same result. This time, Kane flicked a header into Lamela's path, and he held off Dummett before prodding goalwards, only for Elliot to tip over the bar.
However, the Magpies' resistance was finally broken from the resulting corner. Eriksen's corner was met at the near post by Dier, who glanced home past the despairing dive of Elliot, with the stopper getting a touch but unable to keep the Englishman's powerful header out.
United made a strong start to the second half as they looked to get back on level terms, and in the 52nd minute Cisse was inches away from doing that.
Released by Moussa Sissoko following the a typically-powerful run by the French international, Cisse steadied himself inside the box but could only drag his angled, left-footed effort agonisingly the wrong side of the upright.
Tottenham hit back and Elliot made another good save, this time flying to his right to parry clear Kane's 20-yard drive.
But Newcastle continued to push forward and Cisse had another chance on 63 minutes, this time rising unmarked to meet Sissoko's right-wing cross but heading weakly straight at Hugo Lloris.
Ayoze Perez and Aleksandar Mitrovic were introduced from the substitutes' bench as head coach Steve McClaren freshened up his attacking options, and the switches paid off almost immediately as the Magpies levelled in the 74th minute.
Jack Colback's deep free-kick from wide on the right was headed back into the danger zone by captain Fabricio Coloccini, and helped goalwards by Mbemba. Lloris stopped the Congolese defender's effort on the line but there was Mitrovic, forcing his way through tows opponents to tap home from point-blank range.
Tottenham were rattled and Mitrovic was inches away from winning it in the final minute. As Sissoko drove a low delivery through the heart of the six-yard box, the Serbian slid in but was a stud's length away from connecting.
It looked as if that was Newcastle's opportunity of victory gone but Perez won it deep into four minutes of stoppage time.
Mitrovic flicked on Wijnaldum's lobbed ball and Perez held off the challenge of Jan Vertonghen to squeeze an angled half-volley under Lloris and send 1,800 United fans absolutely wild.
