Newcastle United youngster Jamie Sterry says he's relishing the chance to make his mark on loan at Coventry City.

The right back joined the Sky Blues at the end of August, penning a loan deal that will keep him at the Ricoh Arena until January.

Since then, the 20-year-old has established himself in the Coventry side, playing 11 games in all competitions and helping to arrest his team's poor run of early-season form - and scored his first career goal in Saturday's 1-1 FA Cup draw against Morecambe.

And Sterry - who made his first Magpies start against Cheltenham Town in the EFL Cup back in August, just prior to his loan switch - says he's benefitting from his time with Mark Venus' side.

"Being out on loan, I've learned so much," he told nufc.co.uk. "It's more about yourself, really; every day you've got to work hard to try and get in the team, and you know that it means so much to everyone.

"I've played a lot of games since I've been here, and I think I've been doing well. The first few games were a bit different, but now I think I've adapted to it and started being myself and playing my own game now, so that's helped a lot."

Newcastle-born Sterry linked up with City in time for their sixth league outing of this term, and he said that another young United talent and former Coventry loanee, Adam Armstrong, had spoken highly of the club.

There is another familiar face at the Ricoh in Gael Bigirimana and, having settled in well, Sterry says he's enjoying getting a run of games under his belt.

"I spoke to Arma and he said I'd enjoy it - it's a great club," he said. "I spoke to Bigi to say I was coming down. I came in in the morning, and I was in the gym ready to train and then I got told I couldn't, because I was going out on loan, so I told Bigi I was coming down.

"The Fleetwood game was my first game, and I played wing-back. I think I'd only trained one day, but I started the game.

"I hadn't played 90 minutes in I don't know how long - maybe seven months or something like that - and after that, I feel like it hasn't taken long to get to where I need to be.

"Everyone's been really good - all the lads have been sound, and we're quite a young team as well, which is good for me. We've got five loan players, but everyone mixes in well and everyone's been very welcoming.

"We're doing better now, we're starting to win games and the team's starting to gel together and play some good football."

Coventry's slow start saw them fail to win a game in the third tier until the start of October, with boss Tony Mowbray departing just a few days before that 2-0 victory at Port Vale.

Under caretaker boss Venus, City have begun to climb the table, suffering just one defeat in their last six league games.

And Sterry says that there is enough quality in the squad for Coventry to continue on their charge up the table.

"I knew we had a good team, so I think if everyone sticks together we can work hard and hopefully it'll pay off," he said.

"It's always been there, but it's just getting it onto the pitch and getting a little bit of luck sometimes, to try and push on and score a goal.

"We're gelling together, playing well and we've been working hard. Everyone seems to know what they're doing, and we're scoring goals. We hadn't really conceded many goals, and it was just at the other end where we couldn't score. But now, we seem to be doing well.

"We've always believed in ourselves, but I think now we believe a little bit more. Once the first goal goes in, we seem to just relax a lot more. We've got the good players to score the goals. Everyone's working hard, we're getting together and it's falling into place."

Now unbeaten in four, 18th-placed Coventry are just three points shy of Fleetwood in tenth place, and just five adrift of the final play-off spot.

Sterry is hopeful that his side's momentum can help lift them even further up what is already a condensed League One table, as he continues to make great strides himself.

"If you look at the table, I think we're about five points from the play-offs, but we're 18th in the league - it's crazy," he said. "We've got on a good run, so if we can keep going, we'll hopefully keep flying up the league.

"It's pretty tight, really - if you get a few good wins you can fly up there, so hopefully we'll be able to do that.

"Everyone feels really good, and everyone believes that we're going to do well now. It's a bit of a worry when you keep losing and you get on a bad streak, but now I think the momentum's with us and we just need to keep going."
