Swiss defender's stunner is chosen as best goal of the campaign

The Swiss defender had two goals in the shortlist for the award - his solo effort against Cardiff was also nominated - but his strike against the Clarets picked up almost 90 per cent of the overall vote.

With the score at 0-0 in the 24th minute, Schär unleashed a fantastic 25-yard strike which flew past Tom Heaton via the woodwork. United went on to win 2-0 and Schär deservedly won the Premier League's Carling Goal of the Month award.

Now he will have another trophy to add to his collection, and will be presented with a gold Puma boot when the players report back for pre-season training next month.

Ayoze Pérez had won the trophy for the previous two seasons, for his goals against Ipswich in 2016/17 and Leicester in 2017/18. Pérez was again nominated this time, for his goal against Brighton, while Salomón Rondón had three goals on the shortlist (v Bournemouth home and away, and against Huddersfield) and Jonjo Shelvey (v Fulham) and Matt Ritchie (v Bournemouth) were also up for the award alongside Schär.
