Roy, who was the Magpies' second-oldest living former player, passed away on Friday aged 93.

A powerful centre-forward, he represented the club between 1946 and 1948 and scored an impressive 25 goals in just 54 appearances.

Born in Bristol, Roy was on the books of both Bristol Rovers and Bristol City as a youngster and it was for the latter that he made his professional debut aged just 15.

Following the outbreak of World War II, he served in the Royal Navy and played wartime football before joining Newcastle United in 1946.

After a successful spell at St. James' Park, he returned south to Chelsea, where he would cement his reputation as one of the era's finest frontmen.

His career would also take him to neighbouring clubs Fulham and Queens Park Rangers before he hung up his boots and moved into management, first with Reading and then Swansea City.
