Ben Parkinson is hopeful Newcastle United Under-21s can extend their unbeaten start in the Premier League 2 ahead of Friday's trip to Derby County (kick-off 7pm BST).

The young Magpies face their Rams counterparts at the Proctor Cars Stadium, home of non-league outfit Matlock Town, and head into the clash off the back of an impressive 1-0 away victory against reigning Premier League 2 champions Tottenham Hotspur.

Parkinson, who scored the winning goal against Spurs last weekend, expressed his delight in claiming a first league win of the 2024/25 season and is determined for United's second-string to continue their bright opening to the current campaign.

The 19-year-old striker, who made his Premier League debut for his boyhood club away at AFC Bournemouth last season, told newcastleunited.com: "We were all buzzing after the game as it was a great way to win. It was a really good team performance, taking an early lead and seeing out the game against a good side in Tottenham who won the Premier League 2 last season.

"Overall, it's been a really positive start to the season after taking four points from our opening two games.

"We struggled with keeping clean sheets and holding onto leads last season and, after losing the lead against Sunderland last week, we wanted to make sure we put things right and there was no better challenge than against one of the best sides in the league.

"We want to win all the time but to win two away games in a row would be really pleasing. The performance against Tottenham was good but there were also areas to improve on. There's work to be done but we're looking forward to Derby with the aim of picking up three points."

Parkinson, who signed his first professional contract with the Magpies in the summer of 2023, was pleased to get off the mark in early fashion

The Durham-born teenager added: "As a striker, all you want to do is score goals and to get off the mark early on in the season was great for me. I'm a confidence player so scoring so quickly into the season has given me a boost I need to push on and score some more.

"Consistency is key and having a lot of games will be good. I thrive off playing a lot of and, getting into the positions to score goals, you need to be on the pitch and those goalscoring instincts only build up over time.

"It'll be really good to get a run of games in and, hopefully, be quite consistent this season."
