Robert Jones will referee Newcastle United’s return to Premier League action against Brentford on Saturday afternoon (3pm kick-off).

The visit of the Bees sees Eddie Howe take charge of the Magpies for the first time, after his appointment as the club’s new head coach was confirmed earlier this month.

And Merseyside-born official Jones has been confirmed as the referee for the fixture, which could see United move out of the bottom three if they can secure a victory against Thomas Frank’s newly-promoted outfit.

Jones only began refereeing in the EFL at the beginning of the 2016/17 campaign, having cut his teeth in the National League and the Women’s Super League.

His rise since then has been rapid, with Jones earning a promotion to the Select Group of officials in August 2020 after some impressive showings, which included his appointment for the 2018 League One play-off final between Rotherham United and Shrewsbury Town at Wembley.

He is now a regular Premier League referee, with three of his outings so far this term coming in the top flight. Another three have come in the Championship, with one further game in the Carabao Cup.

In those seven matches, Jones has issued a total of 24 yellow cards and is yet to dish out a red card – while he has also awarded three penalties already this season.

He will be assisted by Eddie Smart and Simon Beck at St. James’ Park on Saturday, with Jeremy Simpson acting as the fourth official.

Kevin Friend will be the VAR, and will be assisted by Scott Ledger.
