The Whites were on the back foot for long periods at St. James’ Park, and looked on course for defeat after Jamaal Lascelles’ opener midway through the second half.

Yoan Gouffran, Matt Ritchie and Ayoze Perez all came close for the Magpies before the break, but it was skipper Lascelles who finally broke the deadlock thanks to his third goal of the season.

A 1-0 scoreline would perhaps have flattered Leeds, but – five minutes into added time – Wood converted Kemar Roofe’s cross to snatch his side a share of the spoils.

It was harsh on Newcastle, though Rafa Benitez’s side had been forced to withstand a real scare less than ten minutes in.

Pablo Hernandez’s in-swinging cross was only cleared as far as Alfonso Pedraza, whose dipping effort came back off the woodwork. Roofe was first to the loose ball, but saw his header miraculously clawed away by Karl Darlow.

The Magpies’ only sight of goal early on fell to Ritchie. The winger played a corner short to Jonjo Shelvey, whose cross was inadvertently headed back into Ritchie’s path by Lascelles. The Scot took aim first-time, but his vicious strike was blocked by Wood.

Newcastle began to get a foothold in the game as the first half progressed. Shelvey’s corner from the left almost caught out goalkeeper Rob Green, who just about managed to push the ball clear. Ritchie then curled narrowly off-target after a Perez lay-off.

They continued to knock on the door with the interval drawing closer. After Hernandez gave the ball away cheaply, Gouffran’s low-struck drive rebounded off the near post. Ritchie looked set to despatch the follow-up, but Pontus Jansson got his head in the way.

Chancel Mbemba met the resultant corner six yards out, but Green did superbly to parry. Perez then saw a close-range effort deflect narrowly wide with the Magpies firmly in the ascendancy.

Picking up where they left off, Benitez’s charges threatened again early into the second period.

Isaac Hayden drew a foul from Kalvin Phillips 20 yards out, and Ritchie’s bending free-kick was tipped just wide by Green.

With 25 minutes remaining, Luke Ayling’s listless backpass was cut out by frontman Aleksandar Mitrovic. The Serbian managed to lift the ball over the head of Green, but Jansson got back to nod clear before he was able to net.

Seconds later, though, the hosts’ pressure finally told.

Gouffran’s superb cross from deep was helped across by Mitrovic, and Lascelles’ downward header had just enough power to trickle beyond Green and over the line.

Newcastle continued to look by far the more adventurous side, with Jansson forced into a fine sliding block to divert Ritchie’s cross-come-shot away from goal.

Mitrovic then met a Shelvey cross deep inside the penalty area, but Green produced another acrobatic stop to deny the forward.

The pair combined again with 85 minutes on the clock, but the former was unable to keep his header down.

Leeds had offered little – if anything – after falling behind, but – with virtually the last kick of the game – they nicked a point.

Hernandez set Roofe away down the left, whose enticing cross was side-footed home by Wood to break the Magpies’ hearts.

Though they still lead third-placed Huddersfield Town by eight points, Benitez’s charges will be left scratching their heads as to how they let a third-straight home win slip from their grasp.
