Manchester United 3 (Rooney 9, 79, Lingard 38)

Paul Dummett's last minute screamer earned Newcastle United a well-deserved point with a 3-3 draw at home against Manchester United on Tuesday.

The full-back fired into the top corner at the Gallowgate End from the edge of the box to secure a share of the spoils in a thrilling contest at St. James' Park.

Earlier, the Red Devils raced into a two-goal lead thanks to Wayne Rooney's penalty and a Jesse Lingard effort, but were pegged back by a goal apiece from Georginio Wijnaldum and Aleksandar Mitrovic - the latter from the spot.

When Rooney curled one into the top corner with time running out, it looked as if the Magpies were heading for a cruel defeat. But Dummett had other ideas, running on to Mitrovic's chest-down and sending an unstoppable strike past David de Gea to send St. James' Park into delirium.

The goal put an end to a run of four successive defeats for the Magpies, and they will look to build on that result as West Ham come to Tyneside on Saturday.

Newcastle made much of the early running and enjoyed plenty of possession but on nine minutes the visitors were awarded a penalty which shocked the whole of St. James' Park, including those in red shirts.

As Daley Blind's deep corner reached Fellaini at the far post, the big Belgian's header was blocked by Mbemba. It struck the defender's arm, which he had no chance of getting out of the way as he jumped, and despite no appeals, referee Mike Dean pointed to the spot.

Rooney did the rest, despatching the penalty past Rob Elliot, low into the bottom corner at the Gallowgate End.

That knocked the stuffing out of the Magpies, as Manchester United took control of proceedings.

In the 25th minute, Newcastle failed to properly deal with a corner and only an outstanding block from Paul Dummett prevented Fellaini's strike from reaching its target.

The Red Devils then went even closer and Rooney should have doubled their advantage. Set free by Lingard, the England captain was one-on-one with Elliot but somehow dragged his angled drive inches wide of the far upright.

The hosts tested David de Gea for the first time just before the half-hour mark, but the Spanish goalkeeper stuck out a foot to divert Wijnaldum's shot to safety, after the midfielder had exchanged passes with Ayoze Perez and made his way into the area.

The Magpies then had a penalty shout of their own when Janmaat tumbled under the challenge of Lingard as they both stretched for the ball, but Mr Dean waved away the appeals.

And that was to prove crucial as, in the 38th minute, the visitors went two up.

Manchester United broke at pace and when Rooney was played in down the left, rather than shoot, the forward waited and slipped in Lingard, who duly slotted under Elliot from a tight angle.

Newcastle looked to halve the deficit before the break and Coloccini was inches away with a 25-yard rising effort.

But they finally managed it on 42 minutes thanks to leading scorer Wijnaldum.

Coloccini was the creator, dinking an intelligent ball into Mitrovic, and when the front man headed down into Wijnaldum's path, he produced a fine volley past de Gea.

Buoyed by that goal, Newcastle roared out of the traps in the second half and could have been level withing seven minutes of the restart.

Receiving the ball on the left-hand side of the area, Sissoko turned Ashley Young and Chris Smalling inside out but found de Gea a tougher proposition, as the goalkeeper blocked with his legs.

However, as the Magpies pushed forward they were almost picked off again soon after. A swift break saw the ball eventually worked to Lingard but, with the freedom of the area, he somehow curled his shot well off target.

Jack Colback had a penalty shout turned away after tumbling under the challenge of Ashley Young but in the 66th minute it was third time lucky as Mr Dean finally pointed to the spot.

There could be no doubt about this one, with Smalling wrestling Mitrovic to the ground at a corner, and the Serbian international dusted himself down to sidefoot home the coolest of penalties, sending de Gea the wrong way.

St. James' Park was electric and, roared on by 50,000 Geordies, Newcastle went in search of a winner.

Perez curled a low effort straight at de Gea but the stadium was silenced with 11 minutes remaining thanks to Rooney's second of the evening.

Substitute Memphis drove across the edge of the area before pulling the trigger, and although his shot was blocked by Chancel Mbemba, it riccocheted into the path of Rooney, who bent a first-time shot beyond the reach of Elliot.

With time ticking away it could have been 4-2 but Newcastle were thankful to Elliot, who pulled off an outstanding save to keep out Fellaini's close-range header.

And as the game moved into the final minute, Dummett came up with his moment of brilliance. Manchester United failed to properly clear a succession of crosses and when Mitrovic chested down into the path of Dummett, the full-back rifled an unstoppable strike into the top corner.
